Kisah dimulai saat ia berjuang sbg prajurit kulit hitam pertama yg mencoba masuk ke lingkungan pasukan elit tim penyelam angkatan laut Amerika Serikat. Beberapa konflikpun terjadi, Brashear harus menguatkan dulu dirinya dalam menerobos kondisi rasialist yg masih kental saat itu. Kemudian dgn segala latar belakang kemiskinannya, ia bertekad masuk ke lingkungan satuan elit dimana belum pernah ada sejarahnya prajurit kulit hitam yg bahkan bermimpi ke dalamnya. Apalagi satuan elit itu terkenal karena pelatih yg temperamental dan keliwat disiplin, Billy Sunday (Robert de Niro). Reputasi terutama Billy adalah selalu sukses 'me-rumahkan' para prajurit yg gagal mengikuti pola gemblengannya, malah mayoritas nyaris tewas di dalam air.
Nyaris separuh film that based on true story menceritakan perjuangan Brashear sbg manusia tersingkir (ditolak masuk kafe khusus kulit putih) maupun perlakuan diskriminasi dari kepala prajurit. Namun kegigihannya sanggup mengundang simpati beberapa rekan, terutama Billy yg diam2 memperhatikan. Billy memiliki obsesi untuk mewariskan ilmu selamnya sbg master (penampilannya mengingatkan pada sosok instruktur prajurit di film 'Full Metal Jacket'). Ilmu yg menuntut kemampuan dan tanggung jawab besar, itulah yg membuatnya keras dan ia justru melihat kemampuan pada sosok Brashear. Si bandel yg sanggup menandingi rekor selamnya. Tapi masalah buatnya cuma satu, "Kok doi kulitnya hitam sih?".

Men Of Honor, para lelaki terhormat, merupakan rangkaian kisah yg cukup kompleks. Baik penggarapan secara film maskulin (didominasi mengenai konflik para lelaki) maupun kisah yg perang tanpa senjata. Juga drama perjuangan, olah raga air-menyelam, berikut karakter dan harga diri manusia. Dengan beban sbg kisah nyata, secara sinema bisa berhasil memunculkan klimaks pada beberapa dialog mencekam. Serta dramatisasi melalui sidang penetapan sbg pangkat master (jadi ingat film 'A Few Good Men', maupun orasi 'Scant Of Women').
Kehormatan tertinggi akan diberikan pada Brashear, namun dgn kaki diamputasi serta harus menjalani test. Diiringi mentor Billy berikut bentakannya untuk menjejakkan langkah kesepuluh dalam baju besi selam seberat 80 kg. Hakim dibuat tercengang serta seluruh pengunjung sidang histeris menyambut pengesahannya sbg master. Selain telah tercatat sbg prajurit kulit hitam pertama pasukan selam elit US Navy, juga prajurit cacat kali pertama di dunia. Brian McKnight lirih menyambut serta menghadiahkan lagu kemenangan .. tanpa sadar aku menangis.When it's all said and done
